Local Economy, Local Jobs

Mississauga used to be one of Canada’s booming economic hubs. But over time, successive mayors have allowed that growth to stagnate.

Today, local entrepreneurs are spending too much time navigating City Hall’s bureaucracy, small businesses are struggling to stay afloat, and young people are having a harder time getting a foot in the door of the local job market.

Mississauga should be one of the easiest places in Canada to start a business, build a career and invest in the future.

We have the people, the location, the airport and the industries to compete. But we need a mayor who will actively compete for jobs and investment, remove unnecessary barriers for entrepreneurs and make sure local businesses have the opportunity to grow.

As Mayor, Alvin will make Mississauga easier to do business in, better for entrepreneurs and more connected to the global economy.

Our Workforce Advantage

Mississauga has everything it needs to build a stronger local economy.

We are home to a highly skilled workforce, one of Canada's busiest airports and major employers across nation-building industries such as aerospace, manufacturing, technology, logistics, life sciences and other industries that will shape Canada's future.

Businesses need a City Hall that is invested in economic expansion, and Mississauga needs to compete aggressively for the investment and industries that will create the next generation of jobs.

Alvin has a plan to make Mississauga a city where businesses can start faster, grow locally and compete globally.

  • Make Starting A Business Easy

Starting a business should not mean spending years navigating a bureaucratic maze of permits, licenses, committees, and paperwork.

Alvin will establish a Small Business Growth Plan with clear timelines and a 100-day guarantee for qualified small-business permits.

A dedicated Small Business Concierge will help entrepreneurs navigate municipal requirements, coordinate with City departments and identify problems before they become costly delays.

The goal is simple: make City Hall work at the speed of business.

  • Build Small-Business Hubs

Great business communities do not have to take decades to form.

Alvin will also make sure new development includes appropriately sized commercial spaces that small businesses can actually afford, giving local entrepreneurs a better chance to establish themselves in the neighbourhoods they serve.

Through the Mississauga Housing Corporation, Alvin will work to make appropriate commercial spaces available to start-ups, first-time entrepreneurs, non-profits and micro-businesses.

  • Youth Employment

Alvin will launch Mississauga Youth Works, a City-led employment partnership connecting young people with local businesses, community organizations and paid work opportunities.

Through the Mississauga Innovation Challenge Incubator, local start-ups will be connected with real-world challenges from businesses and public-sector organizations, giving entrepreneurs a chance to develop solutions, gain industry exposure and find new customers.

Creating workspaces is essential to launching small businesses. Alvin’s plan would underused publicly owned spaces into reliable working hubs for Mississauga workers to use.

Mississauga can’t afford to wait.

Mississauga has one of the most educated and skilled workforces in the world.

What we need is a mayor who will compete for investment, and fight for local businesses and create opportunities for the next generation of workers.

We cannot afford to wait for jobs and investment to come to us.

As Mayor, Alvin will make Mississauga easier to do business in, better for entrepreneurs and more connected to the world.
